Very useful Book! I'm new to the world of baking and sourdough was a mystery for me.I found this book to be a a very useful guide on growing, maintaining and baking amazing bread with my very own sourdough culture! However i do have to say that now i use this book as more of a guide when baking. I found over the last 6 or so months i've been fine tuning the recipes and processes to suit my culture and my baking environment. My proofing times are quite a bit shorter than those described in the book (which isn't to say they're wrong) i just found my culture is very active and needs less time especially on the second rise. One tip i'd suggest to anyone else who is starting out is to keep notes on things like consistency of the starter culture and then the dough as you're baking.I was stuck a few months ago when all of a sudden my finished loaves where crap. They wouldn't spring anymore in the oven and they turned out very flat and unimpressive. I managed (through trial and error ) to work out that my starter culture wasn't hydrated enough in combination with a longer than needed have second rise. This book is great if you want a very in depth explanation of the whole process..I have to say i was a little overwhelmed after watching all the different ways to do it on youtube or in forums. This book can be a little daunting at first. but once you understand the principals outlined in the book its really quite easy and fun! These days i've started to rely more on judging the consistency of my starter culture (keeping it like a thick pancake mixture or a thick milkshake)and then judging when the starter is fully activated. Proofing time varies for me now depending on what the dough looks and feels like rather than strict times and measurements. By doing this i am able to recreate great loaves every time now :) and now i'm like "why was i ever hesitant to get into sourdough?!" :)Highly recommend this book for anyone with little or no experience in baking bread! Its really not that hard to start doing it!

I looked at many other sourdough cookbooks and only found one other that did not list recipes asking for commercial bakers yeast. I wanted real sourdough recipes so selected this book and "Wild Bread: Hand-baked sourdough artisan breads in your own kitchen" by Lisa Rayner. This book has far more recipes than the book by Lisa Rayner. It is nice to have both selections but if I had to select only one, this would be the one I would pick and is the one I recommend to close friends just getting started using sourdough. The recipe selection is fantastic. The only thing I could see missing from this book was dessert items but those can be found on the web. The chocolate sourdough cake recipe offered by King Arthur Flour Company's web-site is very good as long as you know they are looking for starter with a thick pancake batter consistency.I was really glad to have a copy of this book after getting my starter. It really helped answer the question of, "Now what do I do with it?" I am very anxious to try the waffle recipes. I can say the pizza dough recipe turned out better than the previous recipes I have tried and the challah recipe makes one huge challah.I don't see a need for the proofing box Wood recommends, particularly during the warmer months but otherwise I am loving this book. He does not suggest fancy equiptment and the recipes so far have been excellent.Honestly, a canning jar with starter and a copy of this book would be an excellent gift for those who enjoy baking and those who enjoy a healthy lifestyle.Update: Jan 2013, still using this book and a Danish dough wisk and the King Arthur flour sourdough starter stored in the King Arthur sourdough crock. I mostly use the no knead recipe as it is so easy with a Danish dough wisk. The wisk was an amazon purchase too.

I got this book from my local library and tried it out. I loved the results so much, I just had to buy the book for myself. When I was at the library, I had gotten a few other sourdough books, too. This one has virtually no pictures and looks like it is from the 70s which made me wonder if it was outdated. Fortunately, I also had the thought, "But it's sourdough--how much is going to change?". Despite the other books LOOKING much more appealing, the more I read of this one vs. the others, the more convinced I was that Ed Wood really knew what he was talking about. The author also runs a web site (sourdoughsinternational) where you can buy various strains of different cultures. I bought the San Fransisco culture (which we are all familiar with) and the South African culture (which is supposedly most adapted to whole wheat flour). Both are fantastic. The South African culture is very different from what I was expecting and took a few bites to get used to it, but it, along with the help of the whole wheat over white flour, has a much more complex, full body flavor and I'm starting to prefer it, I think. One word of warning--keeping sourdough cultures is a bit like keeping a pet--you have to feed it, give it a place to live, and periodically clean up after it. It does take some time, esp. at the beginning. However, unlike a pet, you also get to eat it... and it's delicious! Also, as you get into the groove, it's pretty minimal to maintain, although the additional proofing required does make the actual bread making take much longer than using conventional yeast.

So many interviewers ask about DNS and SSL. I read this book having my previous sole resource of DNS knowledge be interviews. I was amazed at how much I didn't know like how anycast is used with the DNS root servers. My favorite chapter was the one that included passive DNS, the whole book was a quick and easy read.Negatives: None really, The authors said a few things about exploits like "try the exploit after you patch" that seemed like they had less expertise in that area.

That you are reading this review, and my ability to post it are due in large part due to the Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is Wikipedia describes it is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. Quite simply, DNS enable you to use google.com and other intuitive and easy to remember sites, as opposed to an inconsistent set of numbers like 172.217.5.14.In DNS Security: Defending the Domain Name System authors Allan Liska and Geoffrey Stowe write that since DNS works so seamlessly, people often forget how critical it is. And more dangerously, those responsible for its operation often ignore the many DNS security risks in that they never thought to fully secure it when initially deployed. The underlying simplicity of DNS actually makes it a prime target for attackers. The authors note that while DNS is a core Internet component, it’s something that most administrators set and forget. In fact, when the time comes for security configuration changes, there may not even be anyone in the organization who knows how to implement those changes. For anyone tasked with anything related to DNS, this is an important book. It covers DNS for both Windows and Linux; including how to correctly implement DNS security.Often forgotten topics such as DNS firewalls, response policy zones and more are discussed. The authors also have a section detailing DNS outsourcing. For organizations that lack an internal DNS expert (and that is pretty much most organizations) outsourcing some or all DNS tasks and services can make both good business and security sense.Outsourcing may be especially valuable for those firms who’ve found their domain names have expired due to non-renewal in the past. This is a trivial, but often overlooked administrative task. If a domain expires, a firm may find themselves having to quickly reconfigure DNS, and often pay significantly to get their original domain names back. The authors do a great job detailing how to log and monitor DNS traffic. An interesting and powerful method they show on how to identify bad domains, particularly those used for spamming and malware, is to flag newly registered domains. The authors quote research that shows that new domains are often used for malicious purposes. When the identification of new domains is combined with data about the generic top-level domains (gTLD) and country code top-level domain (ccTLD), all of this data can be used as a powerful security mechanism. By entering that data into a SIEM, a firm can use that and other information to better protect themselves from DNS-based attacks. The book closes with an overview of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), which is a set of tools and protocols meant to secure DNS. DNSSEC can fix many of the insecurities the book describes in the previous 140 pages, as it attempts to fix the Achilles' heel of DNS in that it was designed to be a scalable distributed system, without much of a notion to strong security. With all the benefits DNSSEC affords, it’s underlying complexity and lack of global deployment means that DNS is currently, and for the not too distant future, will remain an incomplete and insecure set of protocols and services. For any organization that takes network security seriously, DNS Security: Defending the Domain Name System is an important reference that should be required reading for any DNS administrator. The authors do a great job of showing how a little time and effort into DNS security can provide immediate and significant security benefits.

This book is so full of grammar errors that I couldn't even continue reading it. Syngress should have put forth even a mild effort to proofread the text before publishing it. I am sure it has great and useful technical information, but the presentation of it was pathetic.

Geoff and Allan have done an incredible job making DNS Security come to life. The prose flows forth like poetry that dances playfully upon my aroused senses. The first chapter, especially, was as brilliant a treatise as I have ever read. It would seem hyperbolic to compare this to James Joyce's "Ulyses", but I honestly feel like no other comparison is as appropriate. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You'll thank me.

This book is AWESOME!

Millions have come to love Brad Thor's literary creation, Scot Harvath. Ex-SEAL, Secret Service agent, hunter of terrorists, Harvath's legacy begins in The Lions of Lucerne. The seemingly invincible Harvath, working in the Secret Service, saves the life of the president's daughter during an attack, but many of his colleagues are killed in the process and the president himself disappears to points unknown. Middle-eastern terrorists are suspected, but Harvath is too smart to be fooled by the ruse. Following a trail of clues that everyone else misses, as well as his intuition, Harvath tracks down the Lions of Lucerne. I don't think I'd be revealing too much to let slip that he saves the day. . . .Sure, Harvath is larger than life. Sure, he is inconceivably lucky. Sure, there is sometimes a cartoonish, melodramatic flavor to the story and the action. But this isn't Jane Austen. This isn't Ernest Hemingway. It's fast-paced, raw meat, superhero, special forces, flag-waving action and adventure! It's fun to read, fun to observe as Harvath puts the puzzle together, fun to see him get the girl, and fun to see the bad guys lose and lose big. The Lions of Lucerne starts out with Harvath serving in the secret service White House detail. As Thor's readers are well aware, Harvath's future is much broader than that, hunting terrorists where they roost. The Lions of Lucerne sets up that future. One word on the audio book. I listened to the abridged version (that's what they had at the library). It tells the story efficiently, but it definitely had the feel of being abridged. On many occasions, I had to check my iPod to see if it skipped a track. The shifts in action were just too abrupt. I should have waited for the unabridged edition.

I started reading the Scot Harvath novels somewhere in the middle of the series and had to loop back to read this first novel. Soooo, the first one introduces our character and some background. The plot is pretty standard Brad Thor, but the writing is a bit stunted, with too many awkward descriptive phrases--probably symptomatic of first authors, first novels. I am happy to say that both author and character mature as the series evolves, and now Brad is one of my "go to" authors for long plane rides.

Scot Harvath, former Navy Seal and currently serving in the Secret Service, is with the President and his daughter on their ski vacation. The President is presumed missing in a massive snow slide until an avalanche of evidence indicates he has likely been kidnapped. Thus begins the fantastic journey of Harvath searching for the President. Injured in the avalanche protecting the President’s daughter, and unable to convince any of the powers that be that now is the acceptable time to find the President (rather than when official channels finally concede that he might have been abducted), Harvath sets out on his own.Assassins to the left, Lions to the right, and a lineup of corrupt politicians all closing in to not only kill him but frame him for the whole thing, too!How this has not been made into a movie yet is beyond me. Full of action, intrigue, good and bad guys, and a really likeable couple of leads, this is low-hanging fruit. It was very hard to put my Kindle away for silly things like work while reading this (I generally read at lunch on weekdays and extended breakfast on weekends). The story just grabs you by the eyeballs and keeps applying pressure. While I loved reading this, I felt a few of the characters were developed a little heavy-handed, and some of the plot was telegraphed way in advance. Maybe I’m being too picky. But generally, I’m not that picky, and if I realize it, it must stand out dramatically. None of it’s too bad to shatter my enjoyment of it, but it’s something that’s there.A good, solid four stars.[cross-posted to Goodreads]

After reading all of Vince Flynn's books I was looking for another writer that would be as gripping. Flynn died several years ago and although Kyle Mills picked up the series however he wasn't writing faster than I could read! Lions of Lucerne is the first in the Scott Harvath series from Brad Thor and he is every bit as compelling as Flynn's Mitch Rapp. I would suggest getting the book list in chronological order, start at the beginning and settle in for a ride!

I truly don't know how readers can put up with Thor's insipid dialog. The plot line is not bad, but the distraction of poorly written dialog overwhelms everything.Awful!

This is a debut novel and as others have said, it reads like it. I think one of the hardest things a novelist has to do is give all of his characters unique, personal voices. The second most difficult is creating circumstances that interesting and exciting without boxing the characters so that we find deus ex machina is required. Thor's characterizations are a bit flat and there were a couple of moments when I said to myself, "rescued by eagles...". I thought Lee Child's first Jack Reacher was a bit better, but its been a long time since reading it. Hunt for Red October still sets the standard for a debut military, political thriller. So, for comparison sake - Clancy 5 stars, Child 4 stars, Thor 3 to 3.5 stars. All said, LoL was enjoyable for a light, quick read. Summer stuff. Beach and beer.

This is the first book in the Scott Harvath series. I could tell Brad Thor was just starting out with this series but gave it a shot anyway. Since then I have read almost all of this series. It continues to get better and better. I started this series because I am a fan of Lee Childs but had read all of his books and was waiting for the new one to come out. Thor and Childs have a similar style with lots of action, so I really enjoy both of them. I will continue to read Brad Thor. It's amazing how the material he started writing about in 2003 is even more pertinent today. I have felt like sending some copies to Donald Trump because the terrorism is exactly what Trump talks about. Very ironic!
