Review

‘The book is a revealing study of the underlying values that guided a revolutionary transformation in labor relations at Ford Motor Company.’– Bill Ford, Executive Chairman, The Ford Motor Company‘This book traces a thirty-year process through which the UAW and Ford have been able to achieve transformational results. It demonstrates the power of collective bargaining as an engine for innovation, as well as the importance of the workforce in driving continuous improvement. The union, working with management, provides a leading model for how to value work and deliver results.’¬– Richard Trumka, President, AFL-CIO‘This book accurately presents the Ford-UAW transformation and identifies guiding principles that can apply in other settings. In any organization, it is about working together, with relentless implementation of a compelling vision and a comprehensive strategy. The culmination of our transformational work with the UAW has resulted in a profitable company that has invested billions in capital expansion, creating thousands of new jobs and delivering profitable growth for all.’– Alan Mulally, former CEO of the Ford Motor Company‘I believe and hope that union and management people will read this book and learn from it. Everyone has to look seriously at the recent and longer history of Ford and the UAW. I am very bullish on the American auto industry. As this book indicates, the key is shared growth for all. The book is excellent and will serve to help everyone in the future.’– Dick Gephardt, former U.S. Representative from Missouri‘No other history of a labor management relationship matches the richness, analytical focus, and contribution provided by the trio of management, labor, and scholar/consultant authors of Inside the Ford-UAW Transformation. By focusing on the 'pivotal events' over a thirty-year period, Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Brooks, and Mulloy provide a depth of understanding that could only come from being directly involved. The lessons they outline from Ford and the UAW's successes and failures over these years should be of great help to future agents of change in navigating through similar challenges and opportunities.’– Thomas A. Kochan, George M. Bunker Professor, MIT Sloan School of Management and Co-Director, MIT Institute for Work and Employment Research‘The Ford-UAW transformation is in my view the most ambitious and successful transformation of a large U.S. industrial corporation. Especially exceptional is the authors' extraordinary detailed account of the change effort, which employs many innovative and instructive concepts. It is a must-read for managers, union officials, and empowered employees who are or want to be involved in similar efforts, as well as for students of social change in general.’– Richard E. I will extend this review when I have a little more time. I was a bystander to most of this history, but know it pretty well, and most of the management main players. I think the authors have written an outstanding business history with a level of detail and understanding I have rarely seen. One may disagree with their conclusions, but they provide enough detailed evidence for grown-up readers to draw their own conclusions. They do have a point of view on the contextual significance of what they are describing, and I think they marshall good evidence to support their view. They end (as they are throughout) skeptical about how easy it will be to sustain the UAW Ford relationship under different circumstances and I share that concern. They are not light on examples of set backs and the impact of changing personnel on both sides as well as changing business conditions. There is little rose tinted spectacle about the description of the hard slog through the issues that Ford and the UAW have faced these last 30 years.I would have liked a little more sense of some of the personalities and individual motivations involved. And for the general reader, some of the discussion of for instance quality issues would benefit from more concrete examples: this particular part was having quality problems and this is how employee involvement help sort it. I strongly recommend this book for business school case studies, for anyone wanting to understand the auto industry's struggles from the grass roots and also anyone who wants to see a way forward via Lean Manufacturing and strong work force/management collaboration and profit sharing towards re-establishing US manufacturing on a sound basis and thus restoring the earnings of middle class Americans which have stagnated these 30 years. An alternative to the race to the bottom advocated by many. And yes I did read the book from cover to cover and my review is based on that.

Ford was the only one of the Big Three to not take the federal bailout package. The authors of this book contend that this happen in isolation, crediting decades of cooperation between Ford and the UAW. On the other hand, prior to looking at this book, I'd never heard of significant cooperation by any UAW unit with management. Membership topped 1.5 million in 1979, falling to 390,000 active members in 2010.The premise that the UAW (or any other major U.S. union) would be cooperative when it wasn't facing death (eg. bankruptcy of an auto firm) is ridiculous. The book is simply feel-good P.R. for both sides, and if either believed otherwise they'd qualify for certification as insane. Their most recent contract, approved yesterday, required a considerable sales effort to gain member acceptance. Ford's hourly labor and benefit costs would rise from $57/hour to $60 over the next four years - equal that of G.M. and about $4 over Fiat Chrysler, which has a higher share of entry-level workers. Ford workers have to wait 8 years to reach top pay.U.S. workers at Volkswagen and BMW earn the least - $38 and $39/hour, according to estimates, while the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama has the highest U.S. labor costs, averaging $65/hour. The $10/hour labor cost gap between G.M. and Toyota, prior to the new contract, translates to about $250/car for G.M. Honda U.S. workers earn an average $49/hour, Toyota $48, Nissan $42, and Hyundai/Kia $41.Ford and G.M. each posted record North American profits this year. Ford's deal includes a $1,500 inflation-protected annual bonus for the next four years, across-the-board pay raises, better health benefits for newer workers, and a $70,000 retirement package for some. There's also an additional $10,000 bonus upon ratification. G.M. workers got an $8,000 ratification bonus, double what senior Fiat Chrysler workers got. Those bonuses alone will cost Ford $350 million, estimates the WSJ. Ford also commits to $9 billion in new factory investments. (Ford has recently innovated its truck line by focusing on the use of lighter aluminum. It also recently announced moving production of its Focus and C-Max hybrid out of Michigan - probably to Mexico. )Yet, Bill Ford claimed in 2014 that the UAW 'doesn't get enough credit for helping to shore up the books during Ford's "darkest hour."'In the 1990s, Ford outsourced jobs to Johnson Controls. In 1997, Ford announced it would not take scab parts from Johnson Controls, and the UAW organized those outsourced jobs - at lower wages than Ford paid for the same work. The UAW, however, did agree to spin off Delphi from GM and Visteon from Ford - a new set-up for a new step-down.The Big Three sell their cars for about $2,500 less than equivalent cars from Japanese companies, analysts at the International Motor Vehicle Program. The Big Three base their market strategies on fuel-inefficient SUVs and suffer from lower quality perception. Hence, the Big Three primarily focus on higher-margin trucks to offset those considerably higher labor costs, falling considerably behind in the sedan market segments - a dark long-term omen.

This is the definitive book on electric guitars and the famous musicians that use them. It is "coffee table" size with wonderful pictures of the instruments and the musicians that use the various manufacturers and models. I could not be happier with this purchase which was a gift for my ten year old grandson-- a budding musician. I predict he will enjoy this book into his adulthood.

Coffee table books like this are primarily meant to be leafed through casually in small doses hence the emphasis on (large) photographs of thousands of guitars from the iconic to the obscure. But any attempt to actually read the details the authors have presumably worked hard to produce is frequently hindered by the graphical layout in which text competes with photos for space and positioning. Contemporary ad campaigns and brochures for various brands are included. In a large-format book with plenty of real estate the ad reprints are literally the size of postage stamps and therefore all but illegible - as is the small, wispy italic font used to caption the ads which are placed randomly (apparently) across the pages. Bizarre. Unfortunately, the authors can't resist frequent smug hindsight and political correctness when discussing the ad campaigns (eg sexy ladies used to sell guitars to young males! Shock! Horror!).This is an impulse-buy type of book - the kind that are frequently stacked up near the registers in a physical book store - so expectations must be tempered. Still, any volume claiming to be an 'encyclopedia' should be more consistent in presentation of information.

Review

“I’ve always been grateful for Jeff Vanderstelt’s heart for discipleship. Rather than drawing people to himself, he labors to help others understand the power they possess in the Spirit. He does what all good leaders should do: spends his days equipping others to do the work of the ministry.”―Francis Chan, New York Times bestselling author, Crazy Love and Forgotten God“Saturate is a compelling and biblically serious picture of Jesus and the mission he has given his people. It is a book that is deeply doctrinal and helpfully applicable. I have known Jeff to faithfully live out the philosophies of life and day-to-day ministry contained in these pages, and have watched firsthand as God produced much fruit. I pray it encourages you.”―Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls and The Explicit Gospel “Jeff is one of the smartest, most dedicated, and most interesting disciple-makers I know. In this book, and through the medium of his life story, he effectively passes on the key insights that make him one of the best movement leaders in the country. Saturate is a winner.”―Alan Hirsch, Founder, Forge and Future Travelers; award winning author, Untamed, Right Here Right Now, and ReJesus“If someone were to ask me where to go to learn about discipleship, I would hand them the Bible along with Jeff Vanderstelt’s book Saturate. Readers will find themselves taking a survey of their lives, seeing the areas that God desires to take captive for his glory. Whether you are a preacher, homemaker, small-group leader, high school student, or new convert, Saturate will spur you on to live a life that will influence others to know Jesus while growing people in Jesus, not just at church, but in all of life.”―Jackie Hill Perry, poet; writer; hip-hop artist“This is a thought-provoking, heart-warming account of a body of believers taking God’s call to live as family seriously. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by the details or quibble with the incidentals. This book challenges and encourages all of us to intentionally live on mission in the mundane details and events of everyday life.”―Steve Timmis, Executive Director, Acts 29 Church Planting Network“Jeff Vanderstelt uses an ordinary experience to give us extraordinary insight into what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Saturate is a great challenge to all of us to stop doing church and be the church!”―Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor, Community Christian Church, Naperville, Illinois; Lead Visionary, NewThing“In Saturate, Jeff Vanderstelt endeavors to provide Christians with an image of God’s grace that is all-encompassing and inescapable. Whether you are new to the faith or a seasoned believer, Jeff’s words will encourage you and focus God’s gospel on every facet of your life. This book will challenge the way you see your Savior, your mission, and your everyday life.”―Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Distinguished Chair of Church, Mission, and Evangelism, Wheaton College“Jeff Vanderstelt’s passion and commitment to the fame of Jesus are as evident in this book as they are in his preaching. It was so refreshing to read chapter after chapter that lifted high the name of Jesus and to be challenged to do the same more and more in my life and ministry.”―Matt Carter, Pastor of Preaching, The Austin Stone Community Church, Austin, Texas; coauthor, The Real Win“Saturate is a crucially needed and down-to-earth manual for what is most important―loving God and loving neighbors. What Christian wouldn’t want to know what Jeff Vanderstelt has brilliantly and helpfully given us here?”―Jared C. Wilson, Director of Content Strategy, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Director, Pastoral Training Center, Liberty Baptist Church, Kansas City, Missouri; author, Supernatural Power for Everyday People

This week I was able to read and review an interesting study on being a disciple of Jesus. It's called "Saturate" and it is written by Jeff Vanderstelt. The main point that author Jeff Vanderstelt is trying to make is that Christianity is not a once a week thing. We don't just go to church every Sunday and think that we've done all that we can do. God is calling us to do so much more. He initially decided to write "Saturate" after thinking on Habakuk 2:14 "For the Earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." Every believer should practice discipleship in such a way that saturates the world they live in.There are 5 main points to this book that are crucial to living a life of discipling. Part one mostly explains the premise of the book. Part two describes the life of Jesus. Part three builds on our faith in Christ. Part four explains how we shouldn't merely be doing discipleship, but that we need to live it. Part five gives everyday examples and stories about things on our daily journey of discipleship. There is only one thing I disliked about this book, and it is pretty insignificant, but I feel it must be mentioned. The front cover is very hard to look at. It is bright orange and teal (almost neon) and is quite the visual illusion. It actually gave me a little bit of a headache looking at it.Overall, I thought this was an excellent book! It has a lot of interesting information and really broadens the subject of discipling. It would be excellent to read through with a group of people, or even a Sunday school class or small group. In addition to the "Saturate" book, I also received "Saturate Field Guide" by Jeff Vanderstelt and Ben Connelly to read and review! The field guide goes hand in hand with the book, and is meant to be done in a group setting, such as a Bible Study or small group, but can also be done on your own. It's a spiral bound, 244 page book which demonstrates the principles and practices for living out the life of a disciple of Jesus in the everyday. It's an 8 week study which includes questions, activities, prayers, and exercises which will help you on your journey to becoming a disciple and helping you disciple others. The "Saturate Field Guide" is appropriate for new Christians, or people who have been Christians for a long time. What I liked best about this study was that it was very simple to follow. It's not complicated in any sense and it's something that any Christian can do! It really makes you take a look at your life and try to change things for the better.I received these books for free from Litfuse in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.

I have enjoyed following and learning from Soma communities over the course of the last 5 years, I was excited when this book “Saturate” came out. Jeff Vanderstelt author of Saturate has written an excellent book on what it looks like to saturate our everyday lives with Jesus’ presence and power.I greatly appreciate the way Vanderstelt writes with openness and honesty about living for Jesus in the everyday stuff of life. Many people separate Sundays and the rest of the week. Or at best sprinkle in events of following Jesus. This book will challenge your perspective on areas of your life that God is challenging and calling you to live more fully in Him. There are many valuable lessons to be learned from this book.I may compile a separate post of key lessons. For now here is a fairly detailed summary overview of the book and the contents of the chapters.IntroductionCan you imagine every city, every neighborhood, every street, and every house saturated with Jesus’s presence through his people? This book is written to encourage the everyday Jesus follower to engage in the everyday stuff of life with the goal of seeing Jesus saturation for everyone in every place.Part 1: BeginningsChapter 2: Jesus Goes to Poker PartiesWhat if we were to start a church that feasted and celebrated around Jesus together? All of life was to be done as an expression of their love for God. Jesus did everything for his heavenly Father’s glory. This is what Jesus does. Jesus makes life better. Jesus brings the better wine. Jesus takes empty religion and ritual, and brings it to life for everyday people. He takes what many deem holy (like the water in the ceremonial cleansing jars) and brings it to the party. He breaks down the barrier between what people might call sacred and secular. Jesus makes all things sacred—including wine at a party. We don’t go to church. We are the church sent out into the world.” Jesus didn’t live, serve, suffer, and die so we could just attend a Christian event. He lived and died so we could become his people who are sent into every part of the world on his behalf. All of life counts and everyone matters. It’s not activities and events that are primarily Christian. It’s people. Activities and events, by themselves, are not sacred, but people are. The word holy in the Bible means to be set apart for God’s purposes in the world. “The role of Jesus’s church—his set-apart people—is to increasingly bring all of life under his leadership so that he is the center of everything,” Have you ever taken time to dream about what God might want to do in and through you where you live and work? Jesus prefers normal, weak, and broken people. All God’s people, everywhere, filling everyday life with his presence. This has always been God’s vision for his people.

For a long time something felt off going to church, but I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. My family left our church to be part of a church plant. It was through that church plant and going to a Soma one day confrence where we heard Jeff talk about living on mission and being a desciple and discipling in the every day stuff of life. That's where it clicked for me. I had been sitting on the sidelines of the pews watching the "pros" live out the Great Commission. Jesus expects us ALL to be in the game, contributing to the team, and be on mission. Saturate shows how to get in the game, what to expect, and how to win.

Jeff shares some much needed perspective on what it might actually look like to BE the church. He explains the Biblical support for his opinions about community, discipleship, evangelism, etc. while also coming down to very practical levels on every subject he covers. My only "problem" with the book is that it was a bit hard to follow at times. Disclaimer: it is worth taking the time to push through parts that may seem hard to get through because each part is really necessary to have a good understanding of what he is trying to communicate - a lifestyle of discipleship to Jesus in close relationships with other Christians as well as those far from God. Well worth your time to read if you're interested in a more grassroots movement of Christianity
