Review

“The range of emotions that Sean Parnell summons in Outlaw Platoon [is] stunning. A nuanced, compelling memoir . . . Parnell shows he’s a gifted, brave storyteller.” (Pittsburgh Tribune)“Outlaw Platoon put me back on the battlefield again. It’s a heartfelt story that shows how very different people can be thrown together in combat and find a way to make it work. Parnell and the soldiers who fought beside him are all courageous heroes—real bad asses.” (Chris Kyle, author of American Sniper)“Two of the most intense tales of courage under fire I own are Black Hawk Down and Lone Survivor. I now have a third, Outlaw Platoon. It’s an absolutely gripping, edge-of-your-seat ride.” (Brad Thor, author of Full Black)“Outlaw Platoon is an utterly gripping account of what our soldiers endure on the front lines—the frustrations, the fear, the loneliness. . . Here, in these pages, are the on-the-ground realities of a war we so rarely witness on news broadcasts” (Tim O'Brien, author of The Things They Carried)“Outlaw Platoon is an exceptional look into the mind of a platoon leader in Afghanistan; Captain Parnell shares his experiences of leadership, loss, and aggressive military tactics. You can really feel the bonds forged between these brothers in arms as the battle plays out” (Marcus Luttrell, author of Lone Survivor)“At times, I forgot I was reading about a war as I was drawn up in the drama the same way you [are] when reading Krakauer’s Into Thin Air . . . This is a book of probing honesty, wrenching drama and courage.” (Doug Stanton, author of Horse Soldiers)“[A] soulful story of men at war . . . Outlaw Platoon shows us that the love and brotherhood forged in the fires of combat are the most formidable quaities a unit can possess.” (Steven Pressfield, author of Gates of Fire)“Outlaw Platoon is expertly told by a man who braved the heat of battle time and time again. An epic story as exacting as it is suspenseful, it reveals the bravery and dedication of our armed service men and women around the world.” (Clive Cussler)“This book is more than just a rip-roaring combat narrative: it is a profoundly moving exploration into the nature and evolution of the warrior bond forged in desperate, against-all-odds battles. A significant book, not to be missed.” (Jack Coughlin, author of Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper)“Outlaw Platoon is the real deal. It’s a terrific tale of combat leadership that deserves to be studied by all small-unit leaders. The narrative goes beyond the battlefield to depict the maddening nature of the war and the grit of those who selflessly protect us.” (Bing West, author of No True Glory)

From the Back Cover

At twenty-four years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon, the 10th Mountain Division—a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws. Tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a valley in the Hindu Kush, Parnell assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians until, in May 2006, a routine patrol turned into a brutal ambush. Through sixteen months of combat, the platoon became Parnell's family. The cost of battle was high for these men. Not all of them made it home, but for those who did, it was the love and faith they found in one another that ultimately kept them alive.

Outlaw Platoon is one of the most outstanding books I have read. It combines the grit and detail of The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, with the take-you-there and grab your heart memoir style of Angela's Ashes. Sean Pernell tells his story without sparing himself from the difficulty of remembering the hardships, the losses, and the shining moments that can never come again. This is more than a story of physical courage. It is a story of the kind of spiritual courage it takes for men to love one another without stinting, to give everything they have for one another and then dig down and find some more to give. The courage it takes to allow yourself to get close to people you might lose at any moment. No experience except perhaps parenthood can even compare to the risks to the heart that these men faced, the wrenching losses the experienced and the courage it took not to face the next battle, but to know that people who mattered so much to you were facing it too. This story of a grueling deployment in the under-supplied, under-manned and unforgiving Afghanistan theater is told with amazing compassion and vivid language that is powerful without ever becoming overblown. For every American who did NOT serve, I think we almost owe it to those who did to read this story and appreciate what true valor looks like. The men of Outlaw Platoon meet the most exacting definition of "heroes."Thank you, Captain Parnell, for sharing this very personal journey with us.

I don't normally write a lot of product reviews , however after finishing this extraordinary book I really don't have a choice. First off, I've read numerous real life accounts of men's time in the military. I have come to expect these stories to be different versions of the same story with perhaps a few personal wrinkles added in. What sets this book apart is the authors courage to let us inside his psyche as he bears his vulnerability, strained allegiences, and own moral character as he leads these men into battle. The units dynamics as laid out in clear, concise, stages for all to see. The author does a truly professional job of letting know how irratating many of the platoons internal and external challenges were without ever losing site of his overall responsibility to lead his men professionally. I was amazed by his ability to not give in to more immediate primal instinct for revenge in lieu of the long term physcological scars his men would had to have endured. Not simply a recounting of military skirmishes but a commentary on who we are .

As a member of Outlaw Platoon, I can not stress enough the importance of this book to our nation's forgotten infantry soldiers. Outlaw Platoon is an honest and compelling account of life and death in the trenches and does true justice to our combat experience. As you read this post, there are thousands of men on battlefields around the world killing and suffering for the preservation of American ideals. As a civilized society and beneficiaries of our nation's might, we must meet their sacrifices with unwavering support. It is not enough for us to adhere a yellow ribbon to our cars, to shake a soldier's hand, or even to send care packages to the front. More than anything, these men need our understanding. They need to know that we are aware of their plight, that we are invested in their success, and that we are willing to help shoulder the burdens of combat, just by listening and caring.Outlaw Platoon is a window into the world of America's infantry warriors. In the book, Sean puts you on the ground in Afghanistan, straps 100 pounds of gear on your back, and injects you into the fight. However, he also introduces you to the human side of the war, highlighting the exceptional diversity of the platoon and the strength that it generates, as well as the horrifying realities of life for Afghani civilians. Not only is Outlaw Platoon a thrilling, emotionally-charged read, it is a tool for healing the wounded souls of our discarded patriots and reuniting the American people with the guardians of our way of life. It is our undeniable duty as Americans to share the load of our foreign wars, and by simply reading Outlaw Platoon with a compassionate heart, we are doing our part for the men we put in harm's way.

I was an infantry medic in Vietnam where I lost my right leg. The courage and fortitude of these men totally amazed me. The book gives me a window into the world of our modern military. I can see many changes and a multitude of differences, but it is all same same. We fight, give our all. Those of us who survive come home continue to fight and spend the rest of our lives surviving. We had a small black mutt, Sam, who walked point with our company. He found many caches of weapons and supplies. He also once triggered an ambush early saving many lives. He was one of two casualties. The other was a platoon leader with a wound to the shoulder. Sent them both back on a medical chopper. Sam was later poisoned.PS hope someone shot mail bitch.

This book is not a book that let's you read about what war is like, this is a book that puts you in the middle of every battle with the bullets flying past you and the explosions rocking the world around you. You are there with the guys that experienced it all. You get to experience the real meaning of courage, the meaning of being your brother`s keeper, the meaning of giving your all and until you have nothing left, then giving even more. Anyone that wants to understand what being part of something greater than yourself needs to read this book. Anyone that wants to know the true meaning of courage needs to read this book. The men of this book are truly the best of the best. They deserve to be honored. Not only for their service, but more importanrly, for showing what it means to be men courage and honor.

This book really challenges cherished beliefs about social justice issues, particularly the value of full integration. Bell makes a persuasive argument to allow segregation and even some forms of discrimination as long as such actions are heavily taxed and that money diverted into social justice, such as education and economic programs. The proposal struck me as a form of carbon tax for racism. It's hard to disagree with Bell's assessment that racism is a fixed characteristic in American society. This book has certainly broadened my perspective as I continue to struggle for social justice.

Great book! After the 2016 election, Bell's book reads like prophecy. One wonders, had we all read this book prior to the election, would any of us be shocked by the outcome? Probably not. Highly recommended!

I reread this short story to remember why D. Bell is one of our icons of the 'Struggle" and understanding why Ferguson Mo..is a focal point for us now. This story reminds me that we are worthy of much more than what we have experienced. We need in 2014 to bring our education, money and fortitude to another level. It's time to change the strategy of our lives in America. We have options.I speak of one particular story 'Space Traders'...its just a valuable read to remind one of why the "Black Experience' is just that, lessons of where we have been, how we came to be, how we are viewed and respected for our contributions and deciding where we are going.

An excellent read and unfortunately, still relevant more than 25 years later. The topics covered in this book runs the full gamut of race theory subject matter. Derrick Bell makes a strong, though heart-breaking arguments for why racism as we know it in the United States may be a permanent feature of life in this country. In light of events of the last few years, I fear Mr. Bell’s prophetic book has gained more credence now than when it was first published.

Purchased because required text for an AA studies class. I actually enjoyed the small short stories and the way they make you think critically about race issues in America. Very good read.

A poignant and accurate illustration on race that unfortunately stands the test of time. Without completely rebuking racial equality, the author presents a compelling perspective that demands serious contemplation and leaves the reader questioning his or her role in the great epic battle of racial equality.

This is a monumental work which laid the foundation for what is now known as Critical Race Studies". Not very often does a scholar get to found a school of thought. Derrick Bell did this with this book and "And We Are Still Not Saved".

It is a great book set up in short stories written by a brilliant mind covering a multiplicity of Black people/issues. I love the way Derrick Bell teaches life's lessons from the African American world view.
