Wow. Long but covers all you need to know about transactions (recovery is also covered in the last few chapters). Either this or Gray's book are the de facto standard's in the field.

Tradicionally, the 'transaction' concept is always discussed at the RDBMS classes in the University. But this book goes FAR BEYOND this wide known implementation; with a solid math foundation (some math required, specially set theory and algorithms ) it shows you there are a lot of 'real-life' transactions that requiere some formal methods for defining their implementation.This book has no discussion or topic regarding any comercial vendor technologies (specially databases), and I think this is very good. The Page and Object models for transaction processing are clearly explained. There's a very nice discussion concerning RAID technologies.This is not an 'academic' book in all the sense of the word. It can help IT professionals to make better transactional system desing (databases, workflow,e-business,etc).I would like some RDBMS vendors will include this kind of theory in their documentation....

An amazing collection of models, theoretical results, and implementation techniques enable thousands of users to simultaneously pound on a large database implemented on unreliable disks and networks, with full confidence that their data will be correctly stored. This book tells how this miracle is accomplished.I teach database systems and also do research on databases, including systems-level refinements to concurrency control and recovery algorithms. This book has been invaluable to me in understanding the three major aspects of concurrency control in databases: the beautiful theory, the carefully constructed algorithms, and the specifics of the practice.When this book first came out two years ago, I read most of it over a period of an intense week. That was such an enjoyable experience, because the book is very well structured and written in a smooth yet careful style. The authors ensured that all required concepts were in place before introducing a new concept. And the prose just flows, rendering difficult concepts understandable through well-chosen examples.Since then I have referred to this book often with specific questions that arose in my research. Each time, my question has been answered fully in the book.Each chapter ends with a section entitled "Lessons Learned" which summarizes the key ideas of the chapter and just as importantly, states the practical application of each concept. Some concepts have not yet been realized in practice; the authors are up front about this and explain why.Mike Tarrani's review does a good job of explaining the similarities and differences between this book and the other seminal book on transaction processing, by Jim Gray and Andreas Reuter. Both books have their place, and both should be on the shelf (and read by!) all those who want to understand transaction processing at a deep level. And I agree with Jim Gray who noted in his foreword to the Weikum/Vossen book that it is likely to become (indeed, has) the standard reference in this field.

Before this book was published my primary reference and personal favorite TP book was "Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques" by Jim Gray and Andreas Reuter. At over 1100 pages that book thoroughly covered the basics and drilled down into the nuances of transaction processing in a way unmatched by other books on the topic since it was first published in 1993.This book changes that by going far beyond transaction processing. It starts with the same fundamentals as the older book, and even covers many of the same topics, such as concurrency control, but it addresses each topic from a much wider perspective. For example, the discussion of concurrency goes far beyond the issues of transaction processing as a middleware component. It extends into application, database and search issues. Another indication that this book is more up-to-date is the material on queue managers. While they are at the opposite end of the spectrum from transaction processing monitors, they are integral to any discussion of transactional information systems. More importantly, both transaction processing monitors and queue managers are used in modern enterprise architectures. Having both topics discussed in great detail is a major point in this book's favor.Personally I intend to keep my copy of the older "Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques" because it does cover some of the subject matter more deeply. However, this book has replaced it as my principal reference and if I had to choose between them this is the one I'd go with.

With greed the motivator and a desire to feed an ego even bigger than the man himself, Pablo Escobar's reign of terror was bound to fall. People like him have their zenith of fame and then the inevitable decline begins. I enjoyed reading the book, but some parts of it got too complicated as far as modern technology goes in locating wherever Pablo happened to be. However, that's my fault, not the autor's. Those working to bring down Pablo, could never be sure who was on his payroll. The words "thug" and "sociopath" both seem to apply towards Escobar. He could speak calmly on the telephone with family members while the screams of those he was having tortured could be heard in the background. The fact that he is gone is a benefit to humankind.

Detailed and accurate account of the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar. The writing and presentation though seem cramped and rushed. The style is more journalistic than artistic. This story read like a series of newspaper articles. The author is more concerned with getting the facts over than entertaining the reader.This is absolutely fine if you are reading just to educate oneself or to gain information: I do want to do that, but I also want a little suspense on the way and to feel more involved in the characters described.Bottom line is that I finished the book wiser, but it was a bit of a slog getting through it. A little more "novel" approach would have been good.

Mark Bowden has successfully written an accurate account of the life and death of Pablo Escobar in a way that mesmerizes. It reads like a suspense novel and captures the reader's attention from start to finish. One must frequently remind oneself that the violence and horror of the drug traffic trade in South America was, and is, both real and terrifying. Congratulations, Mr. Bowden, on your in-depth research and account of one of the most influential and corrupt individuals of the 20th century.

This is a phenomenal story, and Mark Bowden does a great job telling it. He takes the reader into the fascinating and twisted world of Columbian drug lords and those fighting to bring them down in the 80's and early 90's.As the U.S. government became increasingly involved in the effort to bring justice to Pablo Escobar, the Americans tasked with the mission were becoming increasingly frustrated by their rules of engagement and the rampant corruption of the local gov't. At times, it seemed the only way to make progress was to break the rules.In the end, there were a multitude of groups and government agencies involved with the hunt for Pablo. With politics, in-fighting, and corruption ever present, it is a small miracle they were ultimately successful.

The book starts with a general narrative of the background of the Andean cocaine trafficking world which was at one point largely run by Pablo Escobar. That's Part one which provides some very useful information. Part two goes into specific actions taken to bring Pablo Escobar in dead. We learn that some of what you see in Narcos is simply not true such as Escobar firing guns while much is confirmed. It's an engrossing story and Bowden's writing makes it easy reading. I enjoyed and would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the life and death of Pablo Escobar.

The extravagance and sophistication of his operations that at one point made him one of the richest people in the world allowed him to buy off any obstacle in such an impoverished nation and engender loyalty among the masses because he used his dirty money to build infrastructure to provide schools, clean water and the like that the government had not proved capable of doing.The mass corruption his cartel undertook is staggering and the control and fear exerted on Columbian society is mind boggling to consider. Escobar's original capture was done on his terms and his jail was lavishly built and run by his cronies so he could run his empire in luxury and surrounded by his closest confidants.The final part of the book tracks the epic manhunt for Escobar by the Columbian military with strong clandestine and technological support from the US that culminated in the epic showdown and hail of gunfire that brought down the terrorist that traumatized Columbian society through the most pernicious, traumatic and violent means.

For those whose 'world is not my home' and 'whose citizenship is in heaven', this is an incredibly important book. I couldn't put it down, and am now in my second reading of it. I have ordered it for my friends as well. It discusses in thorough detail and accuracy from scripture what heaven is - and isn't! I can't wait to be there with my Lord, now that I have an even better idea of what awaits - friendships, no regrets or tears and most importantly, time with my Lord. After ordering a batch for friends, I find I still need more...I have friends for whom this would be most appreciated and meaningful. Still in my second reading, I just finished the section on friendships (chapter 37). I read this the first time within days of losing my best friend to an unexpected, cross-country move. I was devastated. Today I read it for the second time, the day after I learned my soul-mate cousin had cancer. The two most influential friends I've ever had being lost to me was been heartbreaking. . .yet God provided this chapter at exactly the right time to hear his heart for friends, and this has salved my soul as I anticipate a time when there will no longer be good-byes for any reason.

My heart was refreshed, and my yearning to see God face to face increased as I read this wonderful book. Spurgeon had a touch of God on his life and ministry that is sadly missing from many of today's pulpits. I could not read it as a daily devotional, instead devouring it in large, satisfying meals. Randy Alcorn is to be thanked for bringing this classic to us in present day language, with his comments. I highly recommend it for those seeking a fresh touch of heaven on their lives.

This is my favorite devotional book. You can't go wrong with Charles Spurgeon and Randy Alcorn when reading about Heaven. Each chapter starts with a selection by Spurgeon regarding Heaven, and then Alcorn writes a few paragraphs reflecting on what Spurgeon has written. This makes a marvelous gift. Spread the joy!

I read recently in a book an opinion of a well-known pastor that 'too little had been written about Heaven' and I do truly agree!! I am so thankful to Randy Alcorn for his writings on things that really matter in the Christian faith, but none more importantly than "Heaven" - Home for the saints of God and The Throne of The Almighty.There are so many personal vignettes that Charles Spurgeon offers to the listener right alongside scripture which help bring in even more acute focus why heaven must be singularly pursued at all costs. For anyone who is suffering physically, emotionally/mentally or altogether, the treasure-chest of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (who is I believe one of the most published Christian authors in history, let alone a modern-day giant of a preacher within the last century), this audiobook will not disappoint you. It will stoke the flames of hope for you when all the pain and darkness continuously threaten to overwhelm you. "Oh give thanks to the Lord!" - for the fact that Heaven is home and waiting!!!

When I was in missionary school, I had an assigned book by Spurgeon to read. I didn't like it at all. The Prince of Preachers had loads of the pseudo-King James-ese, run on sentences, 1-2 page paragraphs and other features popular at the time. It convinced me that while he may have been a popular speaker, it was torture to read. I found I had to reread nearly every sentence to find out what he was talking about. Now Mr. Alcorn has done us all a big favor by editing his writings on Heaven. He got rid of the fake grammar and verbiage that had passed out of common usage even then. He cut the sentences and paragraphs into units that can fit into a normal mind. By only printing the best parts of the sermon, we find that Spurgeon is actually a delight to read. Wow - this book is amazing! This book actually made my heart race the first time I listened. It really makes Heaven almost tangible. What a comfort in this crazy mixed up world we live in to be reminded that it's all temporary and our "real" life awaits us. If you have any doubts about Heaven, get this book and listen closely. When I finished the book, I immediately started over and listened a second time and I know that I will return to listen to it often. The narration is excellent and brings the message home solidly. I have to rate this book as one of my all time favorites.

Since I am a fan of Randy Alcorn and Charles Spurgeon, I expected it to be good. It even beat my high expectations. Actually I had downloaded it on audible.com. I liked it so much, I wanted to read and highlight it, so then I bought the kindle version. When you listen to it you feel like Charles Spurgeon is speaking to you personally. The enthusiastic voices and the pictures they paint will take your breath away. You will be sold after the first chapter. It is one book I will listen to and read over and over.

I Love, Love, Love this book! It is a devotional book but I sometimes cheat and keep reading!

I am a student at Rutgers University (New Jersey, U.S.A.) and I purchased this book for a Sales Management class. Inside the cover, this book reads: "This edition is manufactured in India and is authorized for sale only in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Circulation of this edition outside of these territories is UNAUTHORIZED."I became wary of this book a few chapters in; the lessons and the examples are outmoded. Apple is listed as Apple Computer and there is an entire section entitled, "Opportunities for Women." Initially, I thought I bought an outdated version, yet the cover reads that it was printed in 2016. The top left corner of the book reads - in a bright red triangle - "Circulation of this edition outside the Indian subcontinent is UNAUTHORIZED."Why are there updated editions, yet no updated information? Why is Amazon allowing the illegal distribution of this book? Why is Amazon listing this book on top of its search?I am furious.
