I bought this book and read it after first having read Gerber's 'E-Myth Revisited'. Both books are similar in theme and if I had my time again I would have only bought one of the two titles. As a salaried lawyer about to venture into starting up my first practice, there is some helpful information to be found in this book but nothing ground breaking. It would be of far greater benefit to practitioners who already have a firm with staff. As with 'E-Myth Revisited', the business principles espoused in this book, which are sound, could be condensed down to a single paragraph in my view. Overall, I did get some valuable principles from the book and it is an inexpensive read. For those reasons I would recommend it, although the reader should not hold unreasonable expectations.

Almost everything they cover I have seen in an MBA program (with a focus on entrepreneurship). But it is good to have it packaged in an easy to follow source that organizes the ideas well. A+

I give this book away to struggling colleagues, veterans who want to grow, and new JD's just starting out. It's been a boon to my practice.

Must read for anyone who deals or works with attorneys

Great book on the business of law. Given my almost 20 years of experience I wish I read it sooner.

Interesting and informative

Good concepts but they repeat a lot of things unnecessarily. Book could have been shorter, but great concepts that I look forward to implementing in my practice.

This is a must read book for all Attorneys! What Michael Gerber has done here is to literally take the technology of McDonalds and make it accessible and functional for Attorneys!

#795,659 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book came highly recommeded by a gunsmith friend. Knowing my interest in military surplus rifles that I ultimately use for hunting, he knew this book had answers to many of my questions about some of the worlds great historical bolt action firearms, and would help me in selecting the right models and models for my needs. This book does that and more. There is quite a bit of historical information as well as a detailed covering of each firearms strengths and weaknesses, operational and field stripping instructions, and even information on the cartriges each firearm used. Most rifles are also discussed in the context of sporter use, and that was especially appealing to me as I hunt with all rifles I own. Even though I have altered a handful of milsurp rifles in the past, I am now into collecting and preserving, and I only mount scopes on those rifles I can do so without altering their historical value. The only major military rifles I notice are missing are the M95 Steyr Mannlicher and the Swiss Schmidt Rubin rifles and their variants, probably due to the fact they are straight pull actions rather than traditional bolt action rifles. Nonetheless, this is an outstanding resource for those who want to know the history, workings, and sporting use of some of the worlds great military bolt action rifles. There is also an equally detailed section on more modern bolt action rifles. Depending upon the age of the edition you choose to buy, it covers in the same great detail many of the more modern bolt action rifles one may encounter.

I collect World War II Bolt Action rifles and this book is everything the other reviewers have said it was. It is especially helpful in giving the reader cut-away views of the internal workings of many famous worldwide, bolt-action rifles, from the earliest Mausers to today's favorite hunting rifles. Excellent technical info and professional viewpoints by the authors, who are total gun enthusiasts and historians. The photos are all in black and white, but that doesn't matter as it is still a wonderful reference book. As usual, a great price on Amazon as well!

I have taken my guns apart and looked at the design, but now I am learning more about my guns with this book.De Haas can take guns apart, see more, and write more than I can for myself. If you have a zillion bolt action rifles, get this book and read about what you have got.De Haas lists advantages and disadvantages of each rifle design. This is not light reading from some stupid gun writer, this is like engineering, and may be too much for some readers.700 pages, and he shows drawings of the threads and shanks of the barrels, for those into re barreling.

Extremely and thoroughly researched book by an author who apparently was one of the most humble men around, because he called himself an amateur.

AH MY 4TH BOOK , GREAT REFERENCE BOOK , THE DELIVERER DELIVERED !

A must read! While this is not the alpha and omega of all books on bolt rifles, it contains a lot of valuable information concerning almost every bolt action design. It contains some valuable how-to guides on the disassembly and adjustment of certain features on certain rifles. I'd happily recommend this to a hunter who's curious about how his rifle works or an aspiring gunsmith just looking to compare the strengths and faults of different designs.

Comprehensive and presented in great detail. A must for anyone interested in the subject.

This book definitely wasn't what I was expecting, but that's not a complaint. Plenty of good info on a lot of different rifles. It's great whether you're just looking to learn a few things about a rifle you own or want or you're going to work on it. Beware though, the book is a bit dated, so newer commercial rifles probably won't be in there, but WWII surplus rifles will.

I looked at the reviews that showed up below, and I was surprised by how negative they were. When I looked to see the book was rated 72% 5 stars I wondered why Amazon served me all the crummy reviews.I don't know how other people judge whether this book is good or not, but I do know that it was very good for me. At a time when I felt like the wax was peeling away from my own wings, in this book Seth helped me get back some of my lift.We all love Pressfield's book and it's true that in Icarus Seth covers ideas he has hit before, but inside this book Seth takes us on a journey, of not just what it takes to fly, but to keep soaring higher and higher.Creating remarkable art takes more than creativity and go go go. It takes the right guides at the right time, and that's what Icarus was for me.

Overall I’d recommend this book. His basic message is to create things you feel compelled to create, because that's your best shot at success in this new economy. With the advent of the Internet, distribution is now basically free. In the traditional economy, everything was tangible and thus scarce. Customers demanded these goods, so value was created when you could bring these goods to the customers. That created lots of gatekeepers who would decide how to allocate their scarce resources: retailers charge slot fees, publishing houses pick authors, etc. However, now distribution is free: billions of people are (mostly) free to connect with any of the others billions of people. It’s an unprecedented and amazing time for us, given how important connections are to us.But because distribution is free, there’s a lot more noise out there. Curation is still important. How do you cut through all the noise and add value to other people? The answer is that you do things that are valuable and are worthy of cutting through the noise. And the author asserts you do that in two ways: making a commitment to art, and getting good at that art.Art, as defined by the author, is work that is new, real, and important. It’s using your gifts to make a difference in other people’s lives. It’s operating without a map, exploring the edge of what’s possible. And, it’s inherently risky. You might fail. You’ll probably fail. There have always been “safe paths”, but those necessarily required you to follow a plan that’s not yours. And people usually have to give up part of themselves to follow it.Instead, now today, we live in a world where you can create your own path. You can find and serve your customers wherever they are. But you need to find your unique offering, because if you just copy someone else, then customers will just go to that someone else. There are millions of bloggers out there, but certain bloggers stand out in part because of their unique voice. We connect with them, we like their style and personality. But I’m not going to connect with every great blogger because some will just rub me wrong. That’s OK, because someone I connect with will rub someone else the wrong way. When you can’t please everyone, that’s OK in the new economy. In fact, that is a differentiator. One action item from this book is to recognize situations where I’m feeling internal fear/stalling/insecurity when creating, recognizing procrastination and subtle instinct to seek approval. Another is to remember that shame is a choice – you can’t feel ashamed without your permission, only if you agree it’s bad.The major critique I have for this book is it’s way too long. This thing could’ve been 25% the size and still gotten the major points across. It meanders this way and that way. I’m sure he could’ve made more concise without compromising himself.

The book in a nutshell:1. We've been brainwashed by the industrial complex to fly too low, to comply, to surrender our brilliance for perceived security.2. That strategy once worked--our comfort zone and that safety zone we were offered were aligned.3. They are no longer aligned and most aren't noticing. That's dangerous. The world tilted on it's axis and folks aren't noticing.4. The new gig is to produce "art" in whatever you do (no matter what you do), because art "connects" and people want connection.5. Everybody can be an artist at whatever they choose to do. You don't need to change your work or career. Just elevate your work to art.6. But to do that you have to step over fear and the lizard brain (amygdala) we have that screams "you are gonna die!" if we attempt to do something risky and creative.7. But you gotta do that because the world is waiting on your art, your connection, your breath of fresh air.The bulk of the book is looking at the nuances of all this in about 88 different ways when you'd really probably get it after four. He's got a great theme and call to action, and there are some gems in here to be sure. But there are times when I was simply thinking to myself, "Really, Seth? I trusted you, and you are driving me around all the blocks in the neighborhood when just a couple would have conveyed the sense of the place."But heck. Maybe I didn't get the "art" of this type of book. But don't get me wrong. I'll buy the next Seth book because Seth rocks and all. But, my goodness, this was the longest short read I've ever read, and I even just skimmed all the Kickstarter Acknowledgements that are a whopping 20% of the total length of the book. Would I recommend the book? I am glad for the gems I pulled out of it. But, honestly, after seeing the pattern, I was ready for the book to be over with. So the answer is, "It depends." If what you are looking for is a kick in the pants to get on with your "art," I'd recommend Pressfield's "The War of Art" instead. If you are not sure you are an artist or can be an artist at whatever you do, and want to entertain that idea, then this book might be for you.

After reading the book I know that the author won't read this lines, and if he does he won't care, so I feel I can freely tell the truth. Again, a writing by Seth Godin changed my mindset with his inspiring and provoking ideas. Some weeks after finishing, I can see the results - and my clients and family can as well. Because changing my mindset meant changing my life. That is the result of reading Godin's books, on me at least. So, if you want to change your life start reading Seth Godin, and why not start with this book?

Looking for Alaska, by Peter Jenkins

Amazon.com Review

In 1999, Peter Jenkins and his family left their farm in Tennessee to live in Alaska for a few seasons, eventually renting a house in Seward, Alaska (pop. 2,830) on the Kenai Peninsula. The principal aim of the trip was for Jenkins to write a travelogue, but he also saw it as an opportunity to end a period of personal stagnation. It appears to have worked, for Looking for Alaska is filled with a vibrancy that can only come from one with a fully charged battery. Recognizing that "This giant place is filled with people determined to live as free as possible of others' intervention," he employed the same low-key approach to research that made his bestselling book A Walk Across America (1979) so engaging--he made friends wherever he went and allowed people to share their stories in their own way and in their own time. Part of Jenkins's charm is that he never pretends that he's figured the place out; he readily cops to his outsider status and invites readers to experience his sense of awe and surprise with him. During his 18-month stay in the Last Frontier, Jenkins spent time with wildlife rangers, recreation guides, native whalers, fishermen, and dogsled mushers, all of whom showed Jenkins and his family glimpses of their own private Alaska. (They also shared their bear stories; it seems nearly everyone in the state has had at least one run-in with the giant predator). "No one is ever the same after coming back from Alaska," he writes and after reading his book, it's easy to believe him. --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly

The footloose Jenkins (A Walk Across America; The Walk West; etc.) hits the road again if not actually the blacktop. Jenkins's 18-month sojourn in Alaska involves more unconventional modes of travel: a nervy float-plane trip through the fog with a passenger who knows the route better than the pilot, for instance, or a wild ride across a frozen river on a sled attached to 13 surging huskies. For all its moments of adventure, though, this book feels more deliberate than Jenkins's earlier journeys. The people he meets seem to have been selected in advance by a booking agent. But that doesn't take away from their stories or from Jenkins's ability to draw them out. He is no poet, but maybe that's why he fits so easily into the company of a people with a natural distrust of outsiders, and why he can bond with a fisherman who "would feel much more at home at the dinner-table with ex-football coaches John Madden and Mike Ditka." Even if Jenkins comes across as more settled and his need for self-discovery a quest that added a spark to his previous works has lessened, the author's ability to inspire confidence in others is a quality that hasn't changed. Nor has his courage to even undertake such a trek. And whether it's the crepuscular sunlight ricocheting off a glacier, a massive brown bear rooting through his garbage or a grizzled mountain man named Wild Gene, Jenkins convinces readers that there is much to look at and to look for in Alaska. I read this first in college for a young adult literature class, got through the rest of college, started working, and in the process of all of that in-between stuff, I forgot about this lovely book. I remember liking the book, but not much else. I don't know if I just got busy or if I was too involved in myself or what. Either way, I'm glad I reread it.A young adult novel about life and death and moving on doesn't sound all that original at first, but Green's treatment of adolescents is different. He makes his characters complex and intelligent and impulsive as every teenager truly is. He does not treat his characters as they might treat themselves, over-important or that which should be pitied. Nor does he treat them as so many adults might, with disdain for their rashness and lack of experience. The author makes his story accessible and realistic to teens and adults alike because there seems to be truth in the conflicting emotions his characters go through.Mildly pornographic. MILDLY. Just tasteful enough for adolescents learning that sex is confusing and funny and kinda great but really just mostly confusing at first.I'm glad the answers aren't given in this book. It's about learning how to move on when there aren't definite answers, when there is doubt. This book is about figuring out some things on your own and doing the best you can with what you've got. It helps to forgive and to empathize and to search, but keep going all the while, day by day.

I initially picked this book to read for a literature class I am taking for a module on the censorship and banning of books for children and young adults. Having absolutely loved The Fault in Our Stars, when I saw this John Green novel on the ALA's list of most frequently banned books in the 21st century, I jumped at it. The grounds for its censorship has been the presence of profanity, underage drinking and smoking, drug use, and sexual content. It is true, there is all of that, but presented in a realistic, true-to-life way. I am staunchly opposed to censorship and banning and this is a book that I not only don't believe deserves to be banned, but it is one that I have made a "must read" for my own kids. The novel takes place within the Culver Creek Preparatory High School near Birmingham, Alabama. Miles “Pudge” Halter is the new student, obsessed with the last words of famous people. He has transferred to Culver Creek in the hopes that he can find his own “Great Perhaps,” an idea that has come from the last words of François Rabelais, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” At his last school, Miles was a bit socially awkward, more obsessed with reading biographies than with socializing with friends, and he wants to start fresh at Culver Creek. The first person he meets is Chip “The Colonel” Martin, his new roommate who introduces Miles to his own best friends. Takumi Hikohito is obsessed with hip hop and rapping and Alaska Young is a beautiful girl, although emotionally rather unstable, for whom Miles immediately falls. In many ways, Alaska is the glue that holds the group of friends together. She is beautiful and intelligent and fun to be with and very enigmatic. Although we see different parts of her throughout the book, we, as readers, never really know her any more than her friends do. Even at the end, there are questions that leave you angsty and emotional. Her story is her own and threads of it run through the stories of all of her friends. She is irrevocably a part of their own histories in a myriad of ways.More than anything, it is a story of coming of age, with all of the pain and angst that goes along with it. There are beautiful moments, funny moments heart wrenching moments, touching moments. There are moments of laughter and moments of sadness. It is an absolutely beautiful story. One of the things I really enjoyed about the book was its structure. It is created in two parts, "Before" and "After," leading us to and from a pivotal point that I won't describe. The chapters underscored that concept, marking time like "forty-five days before." You know something is going to happen, but you have no idea what it is.My Recommendation: I think that this is a beautiful book that touches on real situations in ways that are both touching and tragic.

"Looking For Alaska" follows, for me, soon after his novel, "The Fault In Our Stars". There will be more, I'm sure. Both books have young characters dealing with pain and death yet radiate wisdom, hope, and as many smiles as tears. I love the fact that John and his brother Hank are vloggers so I get to know something about their lives and preoccupations and hear the stories told in their own voices. I then see the author's reflection in his characters and hear them speaking as he might. I am left no less convinced of the genuineness of the people on the page and the reality of their fictional conditions. Both books have been rich, rewarding reading experiences for which I am grateful. John Green and one of his principal characters in "Looking For Alaska" are fascinated with the last words of people. I expect it is exceedingly rare that any of us gets to choose what ours will be. If I could and had to right now, they might be, "Keep up the good work, John Green."

Amid all the sadness and loss and wasted life within this story, there was occasional rollicking humor, and frequently a wistful sweetness that even tragedy could not destroy. I was less interested in Alaska's personality than in those of her friends Miles and the Colonel; Alaska was a psychological whirlwind who never really grew, while Miles and the Colonel struggled hard to figure out who she was and who they were. Pranks and hijinks aside, it was their struggles that made Looking for Alaska a riveting story. My two favorite lines, both near the book's end, were "we had to forgive to survive in the labyrinth," and "If only we could see the endless string of consequences that result from our smallest actions." Ultimately the narrator, Miles, discovered that forgiveness gave him enough hope to move forward.

I really enjoyed the first 60% of this book, which is Part I. There was a very nice slow build to the main event, and the pacing was great. Then the main event happened, and it was a slow, resolve to the end. I didn't enjoy this as much, probably because it was most about the "why" the event happened, and I had already figured it out.The book as a whole is beautifully written with humor and depth. The style fit perfectly with the characters. I enjoyed all of the characters and their stories. I can see why this is a popular YA book and a popular author.
