This book was required for a graduate course I was taking entitled 'The Sociology of Education.' In a nutshell, the book focuses on the theory that schools are virtual factories designed to teach students how to conform to societal norms and to prepare them for the almighty corporate workforce. Students tend to be taught what to think rather than how to think. Rote memorization shoved down throats has historically been valued over self-directed learning. Schools, argue the authors, serve the main purpose of teaching socialization rather than providing students with adequate educations. Another main theme is the discussion of meritocracy and victim-blaming. It is certainly interesting and was one of my favorite graduate courses. As far as textbooks are concerned, this one isn't bad. Enjoy!
I had to get this for an educational inequalities class and I actually enjoyed reading it. It is easy to understand and it provides a lot of examples. I feel like I have a strong grasp on the functionalist, marxist, and interpretivist approach.
Book in good condition, I thought just under $25 was a good price, a few dollars cheaper than used at my university’s bookstore, until I saw the Goodwill sticker for $1 on the binding.. smart move.. next time take the Goodwill sticker off. Others won’t be too happy.
I really liked this book for learning about society and education. The cases in the back of the book really help you to understand the different theories throughout the book.
Useful for undergrads who are interested in pursuing education as a minor.
