Millions have come to love Brad Thor's literary creation, Scot Harvath. Ex-SEAL, Secret Service agent, hunter of terrorists, Harvath's legacy begins in The Lions of Lucerne. The seemingly invincible Harvath, working in the Secret Service, saves the life of the president's daughter during an attack, but many of his colleagues are killed in the process and the president himself disappears to points unknown. Middle-eastern terrorists are suspected, but Harvath is too smart to be fooled by the ruse. Following a trail of clues that everyone else misses, as well as his intuition, Harvath tracks down the Lions of Lucerne. I don't think I'd be revealing too much to let slip that he saves the day. . . .Sure, Harvath is larger than life. Sure, he is inconceivably lucky. Sure, there is sometimes a cartoonish, melodramatic flavor to the story and the action. But this isn't Jane Austen. This isn't Ernest Hemingway. It's fast-paced, raw meat, superhero, special forces, flag-waving action and adventure! It's fun to read, fun to observe as Harvath puts the puzzle together, fun to see him get the girl, and fun to see the bad guys lose and lose big. The Lions of Lucerne starts out with Harvath serving in the secret service White House detail. As Thor's readers are well aware, Harvath's future is much broader than that, hunting terrorists where they roost. The Lions of Lucerne sets up that future. One word on the audio book. I listened to the abridged version (that's what they had at the library). It tells the story efficiently, but it definitely had the feel of being abridged. On many occasions, I had to check my iPod to see if it skipped a track. The shifts in action were just too abrupt. I should have waited for the unabridged edition.

I started reading the Scot Harvath novels somewhere in the middle of the series and had to loop back to read this first novel. Soooo, the first one introduces our character and some background. The plot is pretty standard Brad Thor, but the writing is a bit stunted, with too many awkward descriptive phrases--probably symptomatic of first authors, first novels. I am happy to say that both author and character mature as the series evolves, and now Brad is one of my "go to" authors for long plane rides.

Scot Harvath, former Navy Seal and currently serving in the Secret Service, is with the President and his daughter on their ski vacation. The President is presumed missing in a massive snow slide until an avalanche of evidence indicates he has likely been kidnapped. Thus begins the fantastic journey of Harvath searching for the President. Injured in the avalanche protecting the President’s daughter, and unable to convince any of the powers that be that now is the acceptable time to find the President (rather than when official channels finally concede that he might have been abducted), Harvath sets out on his own.Assassins to the left, Lions to the right, and a lineup of corrupt politicians all closing in to not only kill him but frame him for the whole thing, too!How this has not been made into a movie yet is beyond me. Full of action, intrigue, good and bad guys, and a really likeable couple of leads, this is low-hanging fruit. It was very hard to put my Kindle away for silly things like work while reading this (I generally read at lunch on weekdays and extended breakfast on weekends). The story just grabs you by the eyeballs and keeps applying pressure. While I loved reading this, I felt a few of the characters were developed a little heavy-handed, and some of the plot was telegraphed way in advance. Maybe I’m being too picky. But generally, I’m not that picky, and if I realize it, it must stand out dramatically. None of it’s too bad to shatter my enjoyment of it, but it’s something that’s there.A good, solid four stars.[cross-posted to Goodreads]

After reading all of Vince Flynn's books I was looking for another writer that would be as gripping. Flynn died several years ago and although Kyle Mills picked up the series however he wasn't writing faster than I could read! Lions of Lucerne is the first in the Scott Harvath series from Brad Thor and he is every bit as compelling as Flynn's Mitch Rapp. I would suggest getting the book list in chronological order, start at the beginning and settle in for a ride!

I truly don't know how readers can put up with Thor's insipid dialog. The plot line is not bad, but the distraction of poorly written dialog overwhelms everything.Awful!

This is a debut novel and as others have said, it reads like it. I think one of the hardest things a novelist has to do is give all of his characters unique, personal voices. The second most difficult is creating circumstances that interesting and exciting without boxing the characters so that we find deus ex machina is required. Thor's characterizations are a bit flat and there were a couple of moments when I said to myself, "rescued by eagles...". I thought Lee Child's first Jack Reacher was a bit better, but its been a long time since reading it. Hunt for Red October still sets the standard for a debut military, political thriller. So, for comparison sake - Clancy 5 stars, Child 4 stars, Thor 3 to 3.5 stars. All said, LoL was enjoyable for a light, quick read. Summer stuff. Beach and beer.

This is the first book in the Scott Harvath series. I could tell Brad Thor was just starting out with this series but gave it a shot anyway. Since then I have read almost all of this series. It continues to get better and better. I started this series because I am a fan of Lee Childs but had read all of his books and was waiting for the new one to come out. Thor and Childs have a similar style with lots of action, so I really enjoy both of them. I will continue to read Brad Thor. It's amazing how the material he started writing about in 2003 is even more pertinent today. I have felt like sending some copies to Donald Trump because the terrorism is exactly what Trump talks about. Very ironic!
