This story is the perfect blend of adventure, courage, and romance. As an expert hunter, Britta is forced to track down the young man, Cohen, who is accused of killing her father. The problem is, he is also the boy she loves. The story unfolds with great pacing and lots of intrigue as Britta tries to solve the mystery of who is really behind the killing of her father. Could it really have been Cohen or is there something bigger going on? Who is the hunter and who is the hunted? I loved this book, the first in a series, and I can't wait for book two to come out!

My 12 year old 7th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review: --- "Britta is an outcast. She has been her entire life, but now it's gotten worse. She is alone; her only friend and crush - Cohen - is missing and is accused of murder. Her parents are dead. She is disliked by everyone - and then, she's caught poaching, a crime that is punished by hanging. Thankfully she's given a chance to live, IF she finds and kills the love of her life. Who is thought to be her father's murderer. This leads her off on a journey to finding out more about herself and discovering new things. With a great female main character; the love, the mystery, the magic powers, the secrets, the action and the journey all made this an awesome adventure-romance book! The setting is kind of Medieval times but with magic. Britta was my favorite, because she was brave, caring and smart. I really related to her the most. The characters felt real but in a magical setting. I would recommend it to 12+ due to some of the heavier content: death, pain, and sexual abuse (older men grabbing Britta's thigh and saying suggestive things like wanting to watch her undress.) Despite that, this is a great book that I hope you'll read and enjoy. This is one of the best books I've ever read, I just loaned it to my best friend and I've started reading the sequel, Ever the Brave (A Clash of Kingdoms Novel) ! I hope you'll read it and enjoy it, too!"

I had super mixed feelings for a lot of this book due to one reason: Cohen.I really didn't like him. He was rude, he was argumentative, and I felt like I was listening to my husband when he's sick/exhausted try to argue why he should/should not do something and it hurt my head. Cohen's reasons for why he did things were so stupid and self-centered that it made me want to punch him (more detail in the spoiler section later). He was repeatedly noted as an argumentative person and hardheaded, but oh my gosh, please. Erin Summermill wrote it a bit too well.Britta was your stereotypical YA protagonist. I did love the fact that she was a BA girl who had trained her ENTIRE life to be that way. She didn't pick up a bow and BAM three days later she was some master at it. No, she had been trained from basically day one to be this amazing fighter and tracker. I loved the attention to detail of her watching for prints, crushed plants, and broken twigs. I know that may seem as an obvious thing, but Erin Summermill kept with the details to tracking throughout the entire book. But she was still bland. I don't think there was a lick of character development, and she had no personality.Enat. Was. Amazing. I want to be related to her. She was awesome and seriously so kick butt, and I loved how grounded she was.One little tiny complaint is actually something a friend pointed out and I had to agree with: the horses, physically, could not run that far and long easily. Granted, after the first time you meet Siron, Cohen's horse, I get the feeling he's like Shadowfax from LoTR. He's extra special. The world was fascinating. I love the idea of Channelers tied to the five elements, and that it's all tied to bloodlines, so some are stronger than the others. The world of Malam versus Shaerdan was so cool because Shaerdan was super chill and a happy, quiet place, whereas I could feel the tension in Malam as they walked around. Even before knowing that women were targets for witch hunts just because they did something weird, I was scared for Britta. I'm surprised the King didn't kill her simply because she was a woman who could hunt. (ooooh black magic, scary)I LOVED Leif. Leif was so sweet to Britta even when she was a prisoner (first few chapters of the book, peeps), and I loved how eager he was to learn how to track. He was a giant puppy.I'm putting the second book on hold from my library right now, and I cannot wait for it!I'm curious, though, have you read Ever the Hunted? What are your thoughts on the book?SPOILERY REVIEW BELOWOkay, so I was kind of expecting Britta to have powers, but the ending was super unexpected. She didn't pull off some magic mojo to break the curse. She nearly freaking killed the king and then had to stop him from dying. Woah. I liked the idea of the curse being like a parasite, where, if you nearly killed the person it was attacking, the curse would have to leave.ENAT IS HER GRANDMOTHER??? I was expecting it, but I still loved it because Britta needed a family member. Also, I want Enat as a grandmother. She seems like an awesome grannie.I'm kinda hoping Britta winds up falling for the king instead of Cohen.Did I already mention I don't like Cohen? I really don't like Cohen. Reasons why:The idiot freaking abandoned Britta after her dad died and didn't even consider the possibility that she would starve. Like, dude, HOW DID YOU NOT THINK OF THIS. She had NO friends other than Cohen, and yet he just assumes when he leaves that she'll find someone??? You. Stupid. IDIOT.So Cohen almost killed Britta from that BUT THEN you find about about "why" he leftHe left because, once again as a stupid idiot, he does his own bullheaded thing, basically kills himself in the freaking process, and poor Britta doesn't know how to use her magic and BROUGHT HIM BACK TO LIFE. Oh and this too almost killed her.Oh and the whole reason she's imprisoned? Because he didn't bother to think about how she would feed herself when no one in town would trade with her.He nearly gets her killed because of all of that, shuns her for half the book even though she freaking loves him, then gets all lovey dovey and I want to reach through the book and pinch his head off.Captain Omar really shocked me. I actually like the dude. TOMAS DIED YAY. Also Leif must be protected at all costs.

I really enjoyed this story. I love these YA books with a badass, strong female character.Britta's mother died when she was a baby, her bounty hunter father was recently murdered and she has just been caught poaching (which is punishable by death). She is told by the King's court that her crime will be dismissed if she helps track her father's killer. Who happens to be her childhood friend Cohen. When she realizes he is innocent they go off together to find the real killer. How did she know that he was innocent, Turns out Britta is a Channeler like her mother and when someone tells the truth Britta gets a warm feeling in her and when someone is lying the feeling is cold. Now that is one ability I wish I had lolI like how the book was a smooth read, even though a lot of it was them traveling it never felt like it was just dragging on.The last few chapters were the most intense. And now I am sitting here going I don't want to wait until December for the next book. I want it now lol I hope in that book we get to learn more about Britta's channeler abilities.

I'm baffled by the people giving this book anything less than 5 stars. I can be very critical when it comes to YA novels. Infact I stay away from most for so many reasons. I was waiting for those same predictable reasons In this book and was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong. The characters were really brought to life for me. Their relationships filled with genuine issues and complex responses. I was impressed with the world building as I usually get lost on that end when reading the fantasy novels. I think Erin covered exactly what she needed to. And the writing! I never felt it was too flowery and I loved the vocabulary used. Britta and Cohens relationship was beautiful and believable and the plot was not entirely predictable. I would love to see this on the big screen! Well done Erin! Can't wait for book 2.

I use this book with my students. It's not perfect, but there's not a lot to choose from. A few observations:1) It uses European Spanish. This means some things sound odd, or even confusing, to Latin Americans like me.2) It has errors. I purchased the Kindle version of the new edition that will be released in paper in November 2018. This edition eliminated the dragon story and added a space story about a capsule. This story seems rushed, and it not only has errors in the Spanish, but also one in the story itself. Hiring a proofreader won't hurt.3) It contains too many low frequency words. This is most definitely not for beginners. Some words are unknown even to natives, such as pergamino in the Knight story. I re-typed part of a story into a text editor where I use a user dictionary containing the top 20K Spanish word forms. There's about 6-10% of word forms OUTSIDE THE TOP 20K! Something written for "beginners" should focus on high-frequency words instead. Anything beyond 2% unknown words becomes a chore.4) Reading is made difficult by the names. Some stories use really odd names instead of native Spanish names. This makes reading more difficult even for natives.5) As for the stories themselves, the first one is boring. The second one is mildly interesting. The remaining ones are more interesting and I kept reading them like I would with native materials. But sometimes you wonder if something was lost in the translation (Remember Olly's native language is English), because it can be difficult to follow what's going on.

I'm a Spanish beginner (English is my first language) and it can be hard to find stories that are put together well enough to be fun, yet have a depth of variety—in both vocabularly and grammar—to be worthwhile. These stories fill an important slot in my learning process, when I don't want to do vocab flashcards, or read real-world articles, or use apps like DuoLingo, etc.I'm docking a star because there are occasional errors/typos, especially in the end-of-chapter summary/vocab sections. But it's not egregious (I'd make it a 4.5 star review if I could). I even contacted the author on Twitter and he said an update was forthcoming that should sync to my Kindle automatically.I would definitely purchase a 2nd set of such stories if one came out.

Finally, I have found a reading tool that actually helps me, rather than frustrates me. Olly Richards has put together a great combination of teaching and fun reading. For me, his instructions on how to read the stories takes all of the "I will never get this!" feeling away, and it is awesome to have enjoyable short stories specifically targeted to my level. Plus the short quizzes at the end to ensure that you understood the story are a great addition. My opinion is that this is a must-have addition for anyone seriously learning Spanish. One note, however - it is written in Castilian Spanish, not Latin American Spanish, so if you have been studying mainly Latin American Spanish (like me) there will be a few times when you have to use your own dictionary or on-line translator in addition to the provided vocabulary list after each story. This has not bothered me at all, as 99% of the time, I understand the gist of the paragraph without having to interrupt and translate.I highly recommend this book. The confidence it gave me when I realized I could read MUCH more than I previously thought - it was and continues to be a great boost to continue my studies and to me not feeling 'stuck.' I look forward to getting to the next level and purchasing the next level of Spanish Short Stories. Big thanks to Olly Richards for providing an enjoyable and essential learning tool.

This book isn't mean to be rated using Amazons rating buttons for books. I had to click on of them to get to the typing part so I chose predictable. But of course it is. This is a Spanish reader for those seeking to learn Spanish, like me. It's written with the learner in mind and the story aspect is just to help you learn new words. So far, I've found it very helpful in that regard. I am reading it using Kindle so it gives me the ability to click on a word and have it translated into English so if I don't know one and can't figure it out using context I can still learn. This book was $1.99 when I purchased it and it's worth every penny as a way to help learn a second language.

The author has the right idea for what a book of introductory short stories for learning a foreign language should be. It is good that there is no accompanying English text--is is better for the reader to figure out the puzzle of reading a foreign language without such training wheels! The author works into his stories the kind of words that a tourist needs, rather that load you up with arcane vocabulary words. There is one odd thing about these stories however. I have started reading the author's book of introductory Italian short stories and the first story is identical to the to the first story in this book! Only the names of the cities, characters, and food have been changed--every event in the Spanish book correspond to an event in the Italian book! Stay tuned as I read more of the Italian stories!

i have been studying spanish for about 5 years... i consider myself a "weak" intermediate speaker. it is very hard to find just the right book. some are way to advanced and most are to beginner"ish", this is a perfect book because i can enjoy reading it yet i am still challenged by learning new words and structure. i am sure i will purchase his new book and my skill allow.

I am a white woman and I needed this book. Let me first start by saying everything the negative reviews say is true. This book makes white people uncomfortable because it makes us confront our own biases and ignorance. The difference between the negative reviews and the positive reviews is how you choose to read that information and what you choose to do with it. It was very unnerving that every time I felt a certain emotion bubble up, Austin Channing Brown told me a few sentences later that I was feeling it and why it's not helpful. A few times throughout the book, I had to swallow my pride, wipe my petulant scowl off my face, and keep reading so I could grow. I highlighted all over this book and have already encouraged friends to read it, so we can have study sessions. It's one of those books that you need to keep around, and keep going back to, talking about it with friends, and getting better in the process. If you read this book with an open mind, you can't help but learn something valuable.

As a white man, I have little access to the experiences of people who have been systematically barred from places of power and privilege in our culture. Thank God for authors like Austin, who - with grace, courage, clarity and wit - invite me to see the world through their eyes. I'M STILL HERE is a powerful look at our world from the perspective of a person excluded by many of the structures and systems that benefit a person like me. This book is challenging, prophetic and beautiful. It's a gift to our word that couldn't have come at a better time.

The impacts of white cultural norms on people of color are invisible to white people. That means in addition to overt racism and white supremacy, there’s also millions of well-meaning white Americans who unknowingly make life more difficult for people of color. This book helps change that. It offers white readers an understanding of what is so often invisible to us, and how our actions impact other people every day.Of course, this book is even more powerful as a work of solidarity for women if color. It names and gives voice to their experices. And, it does so with phenomenal writing.Don’t miss this book.

I read this book as a woman who grew up in Ohio, in a 49% white and 49% black town and even growing up in this bubble... I still recognize after reading this book that not only do 'we need to do more' to show basic human decency and compassion, but individually each of us needs to confront our biases. As Austin eloquently puts, white people don't get a pass for their racism just because they've confessed it to some black person they haven't yet wronged. As after reading this book I don't just want to give a review of her spot on commentary, and indeed I don't think I can ever give a review of someone's memoir because it's their life, but I want to give a review of America. And I have to say I would giev this book all 50 stars on the US flag. And I give America zero stars, until black children no longer need to be taught that they need to keep their hands out of their pockets, until a black adult can sit outside on a porch without fear of being shot, until each individual person can understand the phrase: Black Lives Matter

Austin Channing Brown joins the ranks of vein-opening memoirists, offering her story for anyone who will choose to listen. Well worth the read.

Clear, succinct, and poignant. This book isn’t really for white people, but every white person should read it. Austin Channing Brown just tells the truth with conviction and feeling. I have been reading books about race for a few years and this is the first I’ve seen in a white, upper-middle class, and specifically ministry context. She discusses racism in places that are supposed to be above it, white guilt in a way that I have never heard so clearly defined and contended with, and the fear and glory of her own black body. I wish everyone would read it.

Read this book again and again. Share it with everyone you know. Open your heart and your mind. Set aside your ego and really think about the book’s message. It is thought-provoking, inspiring, and painful. It challenges the reader to self reflect and to look at things through a different lense.I rarely find myself at a loss for words, but I am struggling to write more than I have already written. I need time to consider the book’s message. No doubt, I will be reading it again soon. For now, I’ll close my review with a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Channing Brown for writing this book.

A few chapters in to this book, I finally let my defenses down enough to let Austin's story come through. A quick but engaging read, "I'm Still Here" is a memoir that everyone should read. It's a book to revisit too. The way she fuses personal and family stories with current events and deeper reflection on our (post)modern American political situation creates just the right fusion for a great auto biographical account that does provoke questions and challenges but is simply beautiful in its own right
