This book is of great historical interest. As you read it, you will recognize the tension between Zen and the spiritual tools used by other sects of Buddhism. I am not familiar with the timeline, but it seems that Zen was just splitting from the other Schools in Huang Po's time (based on the numerous arguments comparing them). Even some tools of Hindu spirituality are discussed. Huang Po must have been a fantastic person, that he could influence the spiritual direction of people so much. It is definitely worth looking at his contribution. And, the translator did a fantastic job of rendering his message in English.Modern Zen has not abandoned all spiritual tools. Zazen is, of course, used extensively. And, we all know about Koans. But, like all tools, when we are done using it, we put down the tool and move on; we shouldn't obsess over the tools. This teaching is a big part of Huang Po's legacy, and can be useful advice in many areas of our lives, not just spiritual ones.But, ultimately this book is just a stepping stone on the Spiritual Path of humanity. Modern Zen has established its own place and does not need to compare itself so much with other forms of Buddhism any more. In fact, outsiders might not even recognize Zen as Buddhism, if they did not know the history. If one in interested in modern Zen, there are works that are farther along the Spiritual Path, so I think are better references. For example, works by D T Suzuki are a great introduction for Western readers. And, there are several more recent authors as well.
This book could be a real treasure for those few who are intuitively ready for the highest teachings as for example represented by the Dzogchen teachings. This could be together with another book translated by the same translator " The teachings of instantaneous Awakening" by Hui Hai the clearest and most radical exposition on this subject. To my mind the older teachings that were given in the 8th and 9th century are much more powerful than the later books written. Warning: This books are about transcending the intelect and conceptual thinking altogether!
After eighteen years of studying Zen, this is the most comprehensive work I have encountered. I have read Seung Sahn's insightful books more than several times... while they are profound, they do not compare to the clarity of this translation of Huang Po. This translation "gently spoon feeds the reader like a kind and patient grandmother."
I bought "The Zen Teachings of Huang Po" from Amazon back in 2011. I find it helpful to reread at least parts of it frequently because my doing mind keeps on trying to get somewhere, trying to improve itself.Whereas, Huang Po taught "Just let go of conceptual thought."This teaching is way to simple for those of us who are addicted to living in thoughts.
They need a separate scale to rate books this essential. To give 'The Zen Teachings of Huang Po On The Transmission Of Mind' five stars somehow doesn't do it justice. But, if you listen closely you can hear the sound of one hand clapping. Applause appropriate for such a masterpiece.
The source, as the Bhagavad-Gita put in Sanskrit "The unmanifested, that which lies beyond the perception of the senses, the all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, fixed and immovable—the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth", here is how the same transmission was put to the Chinese in the Tang Dynasty during the ninth century.
Huang-Po comes across a bit more "accessible" than many of the other masters do. His main teaching (mostly to do with theoretical/analytical thinking) come across very clearly yet still remain insightful and remain fundamental to the study of Zen. The book is laid out in a clear manner that doesn't leave you wondering where things are going or how a certain section falls into the grand scheme of things (as some others do in the genre). Overall I am very please with this book and would recommend it to anyone with a moderate "understanding" of Zen principles, although probably not best for the beginner.
If you want to understand and know who you are, Huang Po takes you there very directly. For those of us wanting clear directions on the journey inward, to our very essence, these teachings are in plain English. Coming from a Chinese culture in 800's he brings the profundity of our Mind, by way of Taoist and Buddhist teachings. As you live your simple or complex life can you understand that you contain all the wisdom within you. You just have to sit and be quiet and discover this extraordinary truth. Concepts and beliefs cannot take you totally home .You have to come to it by way of stillness and silence where MIND manifests itself. We are surrounded by many traditions that head us towards the truth. Words only take you so far. Huang Po wants you to be still and go in and get it ,a little bit like fishing but not quite . You are the very Fish you seek. Find a nice stream ............. Apologies to any vegans for the metaphor. This Fish, that you cannot take hold of, becomes just another fishing story about the one that got away, and you never can forget it.
