Our daughter (18-months) LOVES this book. It doesn't have many words and the artwork is great. Very colorful. The recognizes most of the animals and makes a sound for each. There are also other toddler favorites pictured at the zoo. I think what I like most about this book is that even thought right now she doesn't understand the story-line she can enjoy the book. I read it to my nephew (4) and he loved the story, so this book isn't one we will be getting rid of and replacing.-kiki

A childhood classic! Peggy Rathman's magnum opus, which is a must for every library. We started reading this to my daughter, who is now five, when she was around 10 months old, and it is still her all time favorite book. One of her first words was "Rilla, Rilla," which is what she called it, and how she asked for this book by name, daily. This is a "storyteller's" book, mostly images, which allows both the reader and the listener to improvisationally enter into the hilarious imaginary, nocturnal world of a small zoo as its caretaker shuts it down for the night, trailed by a fun-loving, trickster gorilla who not only (spoiler alert) tiptoes behind the zookeeper/night watchman as he first locks the gates and then sneakily unlocks each one and frees the rest of the animals, but then follows the caretaker, animals in tow, to his home, where someone...is in for a surprise! From the time she was a baby until now at age 5, my daughter still bursts into gleeful fits of laughter in the book's "surprise" moment, and in fact--the look on the character's face was one of the very first imitations of a facial expression she ever did, and her very first attempt at humor--we owe to this book! A milestone. Because of that, this book is so beloved in our house, it's like a family member or a longtime friend: always welcome, always funny, always a delight--and never grows old. "Rilla Rilla" for life!

I recommend hardcover version instead of the board book. The pictures are cut off on the board book because it is so small (about the size of my hand). The illustrations are what make this book so great. If you and your child like the book, I suggest the full hardcover version. The difference in the cost is not worth the savings.

This is a very nice board book. The colors are vastly brighter than the paper edition and it's perfect for babies and toddlers that have a tendency to tear pages. My only issue with this edition is that the images are not scaled down to fit the reduced size of the book from the original. It is as though they used the same size images from the original copy (which is about 20% to 30% larger than this book) and they cropped them. This doesn't completely take away from book, though, and there is still enough of the images for the story. I just wish it was a bit bigger to get the full images.-1 star for the cropped images, but otherwise this is a great edition of this book.

This one isn't my husband's favorite, because he says it's too long and the zookeeper is bad at his job. But my 20-month-old son and I love it. I've read it to him since he was a baby.My son's favorite part is when the zookeeper's wife hears all the animals say goodnight, sits up with her eyes wide open and turns on the light to find a smiling gorilla in bed with her. He turns the pages to repeat that over and over.I like that the illustrations are very detailed, and I can find different things to point out to my son as I narrate the story like the zookeeper's name or that the armadillo has a bottle and pacifier or the banana peel on the last page. When he gets older, I'll ask him who he thinks ate the banana and what he thinks will happen when the zookeeper wakes up in the morning. The reason I am taking off a star is that our first copy fell apart, and I ordered a second copy. My son loves to turn the pages and was rough with the book. But, I think the bookbinding and spine are done a bit too loosely and that makes it easier to tear apart.

My son loves the physical version of this book, so we grabbed the Kindle version to take along on trips. Unfortunately, the artwork is relegated to a thin strip in the middle of the page making it difficult to really enjoy. What's worse, the artwork is cropped on some pages so that vital details are cut out. My son loved finding the hidden balloon on each page. Too bad that it was completely cropped out on some pages in this version. I'm not sure what publishers find so difficult in converting books to an acceptable Kindle format, but this book continues the trend of low resolution images, poorly utilized space, and a seeming lack of care for the original work.

Pictures are cut off on the board book. The illustrations are what make this book so great. If your kid likes the book, I suggest the original paper edition.

I usually hate, hate, hate books with no words. I dislike trying to come up with my own version of the story. But, even with Good Night Gorilla's lack of text I still find it to "tell" the author's story. I believe this is due to the charming and engaging illustrations on every page. The reader isn't left trying to grasp at the meaning of the illustrations as they are pretty much spelled out for you. My son still loves this book and he is 4 yr. old. Yes, we haven't read it in quite a while as he is really too old for it but, as I'm writing this review he sees the book's picture and is asking me where it is so that we can read it together again. It is great for me to know that he still loves it and that it had a good impact on his childhood memories. It is a great book with great illustrations, even if it has no text.

My son (16 months) adores this book! We got it at a thrift store and I had no idea it would become the only book he wanted to read. Unfortunately he kept tearing the pages. So I ordered this board book version. It's the perfect size for him to "read" in the car too and no mlre torn pages! The only thing I think could have been improved on is it appears they just cropped the pages down to fit the new board book dimensions. Some of the speech bubbles are cut off on the sides of the pages where in the original version they are not.
