I really like Phil Wards series, but they can be a little tedious in reading. Phil Ward insists on including everything about each person, almost every time he mentions them, such as "Brigadier Percy "Big Man" Roth-Littleton, VC, DSO. MM MC", or Lieutenant Colonel John Smith, instead of just Brigadier Roth-Littleton and Colonel Smith, where appropriate, and that is most of the time. When you have a meeting of any kind and 8 - 10 people are in attendance, the many times repeated titles, names, nick name and awards for each and every one is VERY tedious reading and is distracting from the story line. The first time is fine for all that gobbly gook, but just not necessary after that. Otherwise the stories flow well, are interesting and well worth the read.
About 60% of Blood Wings was devoted to introducing the full names, including nicknames, of all the character (one character's name took two lines). During those introductions there was one page of the action I had expected from reading the first two books in this series, and than the author presented an intense action scene before briefly reintroducing most of the key characters. I do like the creatively drawn problems the author puts his characters in and the even more creative solutions he has them use to deal with those problems--out of the box thinking. I just wish the author had devoted more time showing his characters in action.
Phil Ward blends hard won experience as a combat infantryman and Ranger with a great talent for creating a narrative. The result is military fiction of the highest quality. In "Blood Wings", readers are immediately thrown into action with MAJ John Randal and the men of the Strategic Raiding Forces. Ward introduces his characters with taut descriptions and brief background information, but lets the actions of each character reveal the measure of the man. After just a few pages, a reader feels like a member of the team, kitted up and ready to see where Randal will lead him next. The greatest strengths of Ward's writing are his in-depth research and his attention to detail. It is obvious that he spent considerable time studying the actual history of the British Army in World War Two and he brings some of its heroes to life in the pages of "Blood Wings". Additionally, his descriptions of weapons and equipment add to the book's authenticity without reading like a technical manual.Phil Ward hits a homer with the Raiding Forces series and "Blood Wings". Fans of the military action genre and serious students of World War Two history alike will enjoy the fruits of his efforts. Highly recommended.
Although this book reads like a old tyme dime novel set during WW2, it's an enjoyable book and I'm really drawn to the characters. I just wish Phil Ward would finish the book instead of a Part Two which I'm noe waiting for..... I've enjoyed all three books and I'll keep getting the series as each one is printed. It's perfect for my Kindle and I believe if it wasn't for Amazon these books would never see the light of day but saying this dosen't detract from the enoyment of the book. It's set in Africa and historically correct as possible which educates the history buff with little known gems from a little known part of the war. I recommend the whole series as one that can be enjoyed. I didn't put it down after I started reading it, but I've read the first two books, which I recommend the reader to do also... enjoy.
I like historical novels and this one, covering the exploits of an American soldier serving with the British in WWII is very enjoyable. You get a sense of what the British were going through, how decisions were made withing the British culture of inherited power structure and examples of actual events woven into a novel form with a minor love story woven in. I enjoyed it.
I had always understood that the Huks were Chinese communist backed, and most, but not all of the uprising from 1906 until 1941 were Moros. Now must say that as awriter you seem to have a strange sense of humor.Very good stories.
Plausibility is getting a little stretched by now, and some annoying quirks in the writing are starting to grate. But, it's still a rip-snorter with good guys, bad guys, adventure, romance, and other good stuff. Literature it ain't, but fun it is, as long as you don't slow down enough to notice all the details.
I'm still fascinated by this team of out-of-the-box thinkers! Whey left a remarkable impact on a world at war. Their entrepreneurship, unflagging good humor, resourcefulness, and ability to create and implement innovative missions is inspiring and fun to read.
