Gaby Laufer, Hungarian born and Israeli native, is a retired University of Virginia Engineering professor. Deploying his scientific research skills to discover unknown details of his father’s Holocaust survival and juxtaposing them with accounts of his own participation in Israeli wars, he created a unique parallel father-and-son narrative.

This is an unusual Holocaust story. Not just a tale of horror and anguish, but also the parallel story of the author and his service in three Israeli wars is interwoven in the narrative. The damage and destruction of three generations during the 20th century surely exceeds anything that occurred in previous eras.Gabriel Laufer's detailed and meticulous research into the historical archive of information about the Second World War in Germany, Hungary andthe lands bordering Russia have yielded a picture of Hitler's war on the Eastern front. His use of slave labor indicates the level of desperation he had reached by the last eighteen months of his reign.Including the Middle East in this work brings the story right up to date in its relevance to our own times, through the continuing conflicts raging throughout that region. We now suffer the consequences of Middle East conflict here on our own shores and in Western Europe on a daily basis with car ramming, shootings, stabbings and suicide bombings.There are many lessons to be learned from this tale. I hope that not only historians, but that politicians will also take note.
I couldn’t put this book down. Gabriel Laufer surely fulfills the title’s “survivor’s duty†to “bear witness for the dead and for the living†(Elie Wiesel, Night) in the accounts of his father László who survived the Holocaust, while László’s first wife, daughter and parents did not. What sets this book apart though, is how Dr. Laufer has written not only a son’s tribute, but also a historically illuminating volume through his extensive research into the dark and cruel history that his father, and many others, suffered. An intriguing twist is added through Laufer’s sharing of his own experiences fighting for Israel 3 decades later, with insights gained from surprising parallels between his and his father’s very different lives.This book, in a very unique way, adds to the weight of facts standing against the perilous tendency to forget – some would even seek to deny - the horrific facts of what happened during the Holocaust, still just 80 years ago. Thanks to books like these, we will not forget.
